Can’t have something Spyro-inspired without shiny gems!
Today I’ve just been messing about with Blender’s node editor to create gem materials which will export nicely to Unity. I found a very good set-up for just that purpose here:

To keep it “old-school” I’m considering rendering their animations to sprites, to use as LODs (that’s how they could render so many gems at once in Spyro).
I’ve also been reading up on biblical creatures, to get inspiration for monsters which might fit the mythological theme of Kairo The Gryphon. Did you know that Lucifer supposedly had four wings with hands in them, was covered in eyes and gold inset gems, and that he moved without turning? He was a cherub, so he most likely also had four faces - One human-like, one oxen, one lion-like and one in the semblance of an eagle’s. His soul was contained in a wheel which was intertwined with itself (also covered in eyes), always lying at his side. The wheel would move with him anywhere he went, without turning. If he rose, it would rise at the same time, always staying in the same relative position to his body.
Pretty crazy stuff - The image of a goat-devil kind of pales in comparison!
Do you have any other suggestions for mythological creatures I could make for this game?
UPDATE: Managed to make some more vibrantly coloured and more Spyro-esque gem materials (last 3 pictures)

I did it! Low-poly pixelart texturing! This was a lot more fun than I imagined!
Redalchemy very kindly provided me with the 3D mesh for this chest, as well as UV outlines.
EDIT: Managed to put some lights and shadows in there, but if I try to render it with a normal map it becomes transparent, for some reason. Anyone know how to fix that?
